STEAM Challenge 07 – #FluxSTEAM7



For this challenge, you will design and build a boat! The boat should be able to float in water and carry materials from one place to another. What will the boat look like? What type of boat will it be?



  1. A boat that can keep afloat while carrying a load (weight/objects in the boat).
  2. A short video (Max. 2 minutes) explaining how you built the boat, materials used, how it works, footage of the boat carrying a load, etc.

Research and Brainstorm

What type of boat will it be? Think about the boats you have seen, why do they float? What materials could you use to make one? Write down the features that make a boat float!

SAFETY NOTE: These are model boats. All boats made should be smaller or be able to fit into a bathtub. DO NOT make large scale boats that hold a person.


Build Your Boat

Find a bowl of water, the sink, or bathtub to test your boat. Make sure to have an adult to help you! Does your boat float? Can it hold and carry different objects? How much weight can it hold? How long will it stay afloat? What changes can you make?

Share It

To be eligible for the prizes listed below you need to share your boat. Create a short (Max 2 min video) Include details like what materials did you use, what problems/issues did you have and how did you resolve or overcome them? How much weight can your boat hold? Explain the modifications you made and why you made them.

Upload/share your video to Twitter, Facebook or Instagram using #FluxSTEAM7 and tag (Flux. on Facebook) and tag @BucksIUSTEAM. On Facebook set your post to public.

 Check out Fab Lab, powered by Bucks County IU. The Mobile Fab Lab (fabrication laboratory) is one of only 50 in the United States and is designed to inspire and encourage students to pursue careers in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) fields. The Mobile Fab Lab is a transit van that visits schools for a one-week residency. The van carries digital fabrication and computer science equipment that is housed within mobile carts. The equipment includes coding and robotics materials, 3D printers, laser and vinyl cutters, a CNC router, and more. The MFL gives students access to digital fabrication and CS programming that they currently do not have.
